And so, we conclude this little excursion back to where it all began… with the first fight with Jo Amon. Admittedly, I did end up relying on that donor save to avoid having to grind for hours to unlock Kiryu’s last attack… and last health upgrade. In the end, the advice to use the Cursed Sengetsu swords ended up being invaluable: the fight was somehow even easier than the YouTube videos I saw of this fight seemed to suggest. To the point where if I just decided to do the fight that way and call it a night, this video would’ve been under 15 minutes.

Since such a short video would be something of a disappointment, I decided to find some way to drag things out. First, I decided to actually showcase the annoying tricks that each of Amon’s three (!!!) forms can pull out to make Kiryu – and by extension, the player – cry for mercy. The first one is essentially a greatest hits collection of the gunmen Kiryu faces off in the main story. The second phase, on the other hand, is somehow simultaneously unique, simple and the most devastating of all. Amon just starts chucking grenades at you and runs as far away as possible at breakneck speed. The final phase is the easiest of the three, but it’s essentially just a mix-and-match of various boss techniques, though Amon does get a third layer to his lifebar… the first two forms only have two layers apiece.

Since the original Yakuza’s combat is janky in most respects, I didn’t want to do a full fight again Amon without the swords. This was compounded by the only YouTube video I saw of someone attempting it: it took a significant amount of time and essentially perfect technique. So, as a compromise, I decided to try just fighting his final phase bare-handed. And admittedly, I had to upgrade from Staminan XXs to Royales to do it. Even that ended up taking me two attempts.

And with that, I’m closing the book on Yakuza 1. I did all the substories and I fought the secret boss. That’s everything I did in all of the other Yakuza games, from 0 all the way up to the Remaster of 4. Play Extend!! will be going on a brief hiatus while I work on another project. But believe me, the next game I’ll be covering will be offering closure for a request that was made of me years ago…
