This one is a dream come true for me. I'm playing this in PC-VR using a copy of X-Wing Alliance that I bought on Steam. I'm playing on a Quest 2 using Virtual Desktop. This should work for any headset that is SteamVR capable. Instructions to get it working are down at the end.

I played the original legendary X-Wing on a 386 with 4 megs (not gigs) of ram and an 80 meg hard drive while playing with no sound and mouse/keyboard controls but this one was the first Star Wars sim game I owned when I had a powerful system to run it. I think I ran this one on a K6-2 chip and a Voodoo 3 video card and it ran well on Windows 98. A great time in gaming for me and X-Wing Alliance was near the center of that experience.

This really brings it all back to me and takes it way over the top with the VR experience. The cockpits being low poly and cardboard-looking really doesn't take away from the experience at all. They look just like they did then and they were good enough for us in 1999. This is so much fun in VR!

If you want to play this game in VR you need to first purchase the game on Steam. It's currently $9.99.

Visit the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade website and install the main patch then install the update patches in order.

Then run the X-Wing Alliance shortcut that gets put on your desktop. Be sure NOT to run it from Steam or it won't work. Run Babu Frik's Configurator and accept the agreement then hit next until you reach "Select Components". Click "Customize the Special Effects" then click "Customize the Special Effects" again and hit next. Defaults are good for most everything but I did change mine to run bloom on the highest preset. "Head Tracking Options" is where you need to go to turn on VR through SteamVR. You can play with other settings in there like MSAA or FXAA. Then hit next until you can hit finish. Make sure you have your headset ready and SteamVR already started. Hit play and you will be paying X-Wing Alliance in VR!
