Today we're playing Neuro, taking a deep dive on a janky odyssey lost to the western world for a decade, revived out of the blue in English by a Taiwanaese company around 2016/2017 for some reason. It's a sci-fi shooter character study of an idiot who bumbles his way through a crime investigation, ruining the lives of many in the process.
It may have had an effect on me.

Index
001. Introduction 00:00
- Neuro is the last game from 2006, what is it and why?

002. The Degeneration of Humanity (and English) 03:26
- An introduction to Neuro’s theme and its incredibly absurd voice acting, how it effects the experience

003. Presenting the Tutorial 07:42
- The limited ways Neuro can present information and story, and our introduction to gameplay

004. Stage 1 – Space Age Musket War 14:31
- Stage 1’s relatively slow pace as a teaching mechanism and a way to break players in

005. Ramone Attempt Two 21:21
- A mini-essay on idiot protagonists and how Neuro handles its own.

006. The Extrares: A Foundational Combo 27:43
- Neuro’s level design and artificial intelligence viewed through the lens of trying to balance a very powerful weapon

007. The Slum Escape with Choppy Checkpoints and Excellent Escorts 38:27
- We’re playing a game that somehow has bad checkpoints yet very good companions. Also a very detailed slum, or at least, a 1/10th very detailed slum.

008. The Breakdown Break-In 44:57
- James has a bit of a crisis, does the level design reflect his shift in character, or am I overthinking things?

009. Warden Avatar’s Crazy Crusade and Combat Balancing 51:33
- We run into the mid-game philosophical conflict and weight up how weapons and powers add up, against themselves and each other.

010. Softlock Picking 01:01:20
- It is what it is

011. The Terrorism Takeback 01:05:08
- The role Warden-Avatar plays in James’s own arc, acting as a mid game accomplice, and how the game tries to sell setpieces on a tiny budget (it can’t, but it tries with charm)

012. The End? 01:13:57
- Well I mean, if you’re looking here, you can see there’s more segments, and the video still has like 20 minutes left.

013. Stage 9/8 01:16:59
- The story is over, the game is not, it has a bit more to say.

014. The Arcs of James and Walter 01:20:32
- Taking Neuro as a character study, James’s newfound confidence is demonstrated to be a rather shallow affair, Walter contrasts with James like Warden Avatar had prior. Also I shoot a lot of people.

015. The Manual 01:28:02
- The Manual for Neuro is filled with setting details, character bios, chronology and weapon lore, 90% of it is never brought up in game and doesn’t actually help much, giving Neuro a weird sense of place.

016. The Tutorial 01:32:25
- I finally really talk about the tutorial, it’s one of those retrospect things.

017. Conclusion 01:34:06
- Subtle madness concludes

Notes:
- So the title, it's hard to sum up Neuro with a title, some were odyssey of an idiot, on Mental Strike, a resonant story. But this game may be the last game from 2006 to be "released" redone for another Market like this, at least that I know of, feel free to correct me.

- I can claim I have no shame letting cutscenes run for so long, but I did try (and did successfully) cut them down here and there, but that means I reduced a cutscene from 3 minutes to about half that.

- Most of this game is machine hum, I actually added more music on my last pass, but this video mostly lacks music to be in keeping with Neuro.

- I do believe in my take in the story, but I do see a lot of flaws and contrivances, I mostly forgive things based on how entertained I am, and I was very entertained, plus the plot is so awkwardly delivered I only noticed certain things during the edit, and hey, if it had me fooled for that long it wins, I'm willing to be the fool for it. I'm not some "objectivity" lad who's pretending to be clever
