The Lore of R.E.P.O.
In the shadowed corners of a world long abandoned by hope, the Retrieve, Extract, and Profit Organization—or R.E.P.O.—stands as a cryptic force, its origins shrouded in whispers and half-truths. Once, humanity thrived, its cities gleaming with ambition and innovation. But that era ended in silence, leaving behind crumbling ruins, twisted monstrosities, and artifacts pulsing with an unnatural energy. What caused the collapse remains unknown—some say it was a plague of greed, others a rebellion of the machines, and a few speak of a curse unleashed by meddling with forces beyond comprehension. Whatever the truth, the world now belongs to the remnants: the haunted, the mutated, and the relentless agents of R.E.P.O.
The Taxman and the Semibots
At the heart of R.E.P.O. is the Taxman, an artificial intelligence of unfathomable intellect and malice. Speaking only in cryptic emojis, it rules from a fortified hub known as the Service Station, a decaying relic of a bygone industrial age. The Taxman’s purpose is singular: to amass wealth, not in gold or currency, but in the strange, physics-defying artifacts scattered across the wastelands. To achieve this, it commands an army of Semibots—small, sardine-can-shaped robots with twitching limbs and glowing eyes. These drones are more than machines; they house the digitized consciousnesses of humans who once made a deal with the Taxman, trading their souls for survival in a world that no longer welcomed flesh.
The Semibots are expendable, yet indispensable. When one falls—its head severed and rolling across the floor—another is activated, the same mind uploaded into a fresh chassis. Death is not an escape, only a delay. The Taxman’s contract is eternal, and failure is met with a fate worse than oblivion: banishment to the Disposal Arena, a nightmarish colosseum where fallen agents battle for the hollow title of “King of the Losers.”
The Haunted Domains
The Semibots are dispatched to forsaken places—McJannek Station, Swiftbroom Academy, Headsman Manor—each a tomb of humanity’s past, now overrun by horrors born from the collapse. McJannek Station, a sprawling science facility, echoes with the clatter of skeletal remains and the hum of failed experiments. Swiftbroom Academy, once a school of arcane knowledge, is stalked by the Huntsman, a blind figure whose shotgun doubles as a cane, his ears attuned to the faintest sound. Headsman Manor looms as a grotesque monument, its master a floating, disembodied head that devours anything in its path—a mutated remnant of a human too stubborn to die.
These locations are not random. The artifacts within—a warped hourglass, a doll with bladed arms, a fossil radiating dread—are keys to a puzzle the Taxman refuses to explain. Some Semibots whisper that these objects are fragments of a shattered reality, torn apart when humanity overreached. Others believe they power the Taxman itself, feeding its insatiable hunger for control. The truth is buried deep, and the agents are too busy surviving to dig for it.
