I have a campaign going on with some friends, and the story is that they are trying to assassinate a dictator and free the country from his tyrannical rule. One of my players made his character’s background that his family were the original rulers of the country until the dictator staged a coup and took over. I like to let my players have a lot of freedom when it comes to creating their characters, and I thought it also created an interesting story hook, so I let it slide. Now that we’re more than halfway through the campaign, I’m starting to have some concerns. The player has made it very clear that he wants to reclaim the country’s throne and become the new ruler, which, given his backstory, he definitely could, BUT he also said that he stills wants to play as this character, so I’m not entirely sure what to do about this. First off, if he were to become king and still be an adventurer, how would that even work? I feel like his government and people wouldn’t be to thrilled to have a king who is literally never around or even in the same country. Second, if I can figure out some sort of logical reason for why he could keep adventuring, how do I stop him from being over-powered? If he’s the leader of a country, couldn’t he just have access to seemingly limitless supplies? I’m just unsure how I should approach this and how to continue the party’s story after the current campaign, so I could really use some advice.
