"Into the Breach" is a turn-based strategy game developed and published by Indie-studio Subset Games, the creators of FTL: Faster Than Light in 2018. Later they published an advanced version of the game that contains more friendly and enemy units with more abilities and even more items to use in your mechs.
"Into the Breach" takes place in an apocalyptic future where giant monsters, just like in the Godzilla-setting, have invaded Earth. Humanity is losing this battle though, so time-travellers are being sent back in time to fight the monstrosities. The player leads a squad of mechs and pilots with different abililties to fight these beasts. One time-traveller who survived may return for the next run.
The challenging game has some (lighter) role-playing elements, but works mostly like a more sophisticated version of chess or a puzzle game. The game is not only about shooting, but about movement, about use of abilities and about reduction of received damage to the mechs and other assets to a minimum.
Within a few turns the player needs to make decisions that can lead to a game over and end the game very quickly. Intellectually this game is demanding and few mistakes can lead to a game over even in lower difficulty levels. Helpful mechanics like going back in time once per battle make this a bit less painful.
Like FTL "Into the Breach" aims at a high replayability. The game gains this replayability by a good number of mechs, loadout possibilites and abilities. The advanced version of the game sports more monsters with more abilities. The graphics are rough but functional pixels.
The gaming press received the game favourably, and the game won a number of prizes. I concur and would rate it (within a category for small studio titles) as a very good game, around 85/100. More story, a real campaign and some more background could have made the game much better though. Thus this game is more a thing for shorter breaks. Good for casual gamers, but in the mid to long run less interesting for serious gamers.
