INTO THE BREACH, THE PC/macOS/NINTENDO SWITCH GAME
"Into the Breach" is a turn-based chess-like strategy video game with rogue-like elements. The game features simple and cute pixel graphics and basic sounds and music. Time-travelling Mech squads need to save Earth and humanity from giant monsters.
"Into the Breach" was developed and published by Indie-studio Subset Games, the creators of FTL: Faster Than Light in 2018. Later they published an advanced version of the game that contains more friendly and enemy units with more abilities and even more items to use in your Mechs.
INTO THE BREACH, THE BACKGROUND
"Into the Breach" takes place in an apocalyptic future where giant monsters – the Vek - have invaded Earth just like in the Godzilla-setting. Humanity is losing this battle though, so time-travellers are being sent back in time to fight the monstrosities. The player leads a squad of such time-travelling Mechs and their pilots. Both come with different abilities to fight the beasts. One time-travelling pilot who survived the run may return for the next one. Pilots and Mech squads can be unlocked. Otherwise all benefits have to be gained anew in each run.
The challenging game has some lighter role-playing elements but works mostly like a more sophisticated version of chess or a puzzle game. The game is not only about shooting, but about movement, about use of abilities and about reduction of received damage to the mechs and other assets to a minimum. Successful strategies often contain turning the Vek against each other.
Within a few turns the player needs to make decisions that can lead to a game over and end the game very quickly. Intellectually this game is demanding and few mistakes can lead to a Game Over even in lower difficulty levels. Helpful mechanics like going back in time once per battle make this a bit less painful.
Like FTL, "Into the Breach" aims at a high replayability. The game gains this replayability by a good number of Mechs, loadout options and abilities. The advanced version of the game sports more monsters with more abilities.
INTO THE BREACH: RECEPTION
The gaming press received "Into the Breach" favourably, and the game won a number of prizes. I mostly concur and would rate it (within a category for small studio titles) as a very good game, around 82/100. More storytelling (actually there is not really any), a real campaign (you hop two to four islands with something like five levels each before reaching the Vek nest) and some more background could have made the game much better though. Thus this game is more a thing for shorter breaks. Good for casual gamers, but in the mid to long run probably less interesting for serious gamers.
INTO THE BREACH, THIS LET'S PLAY
In this Let's Play "Into the Breach" we will see lots of uncut commented gameplay and a complete playthrough on varying difficulty settings up to unfair. The Let's Play functions also as a walkthrough. As with all my Let's Plays I will publish a final review and introduction/tutorial episode after beating the game. Comments on ways to accomplish goals and missions are especially welcome so the community may profit. The comment section is all yours :)
NEW HERE?
My callsign is Hardball, PlayingHardball. I’ve always loved gaming. I am passionate about games as forms of art, storytelling and ways of exploring narratives in interactive ways. I have been playing video games nearly all my life, on the internet for a few years now. I enjoy a great variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (like Mass Effect, Disco Elysium, The Witcher, etc), strategy/tactical games (like XCOM, Panzercorps, Total War etc), and RPGs (like Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!
