This title made me a fan of point 'n click adventure games. At first glance the story seems simple, but in the end it's a mythical tale about the roots of humanity. Because of its zen-like quality it struck a chord with me. The French developer Cryo Interactive delivers Johan Robson's story with fantastic graphics, tasteful designs by Thomas Boulard and an amazing atmospheric soundtrack composed by Pierre Estève & Stéphane Picq. ( Buy the album at www.shootingstarshop.com) For these reasons, "Atlantis, The Lost Tales" became a cult-classic for many.

Despite my praise it has its shortcomings. And for being a Cryo-title, it's in the gameplay of course. There are some timed action-sequences which are difficult to get through, especially with an invisible cursor. The automatic save-system is another regretful decision. You have to play sequences over and over again to get past the countless deadly situations that our hero Seth is lured into. It also contains a few design-flaws which creates trail-and-error situations. Don't get me started on the crab-race... There is another bad aspect to the game; its programming. See my technical notes below.

TECHNICAL NOTES

- The original Windows 95-version was far from stable. A patch solved lots of problems but created one more; characters had graphical glitches in their faces. Still, this version of the game was the most stable and it was used for all it's re-releases on physical media. The DVD-version is untouched by this but has its own problems like missing sounds for example. Later versions of Windows weren't too kind for Atlantis either. If you were lucky enough to get the game to work, the cursor and characters moved at ridiculous speed and got you out of the overall experience. Years later, GOG released their version of the game to be compatible with newer systems. Alas, except for the speed-issue it contains all the flaws mentioned above and add some more. I think it's a difficult game for GOG to keep up-to-date because of the poor programming in the source-material. They never got it stable. The last option for me was to use DOSBOX or a Virtual Machine, but I never got the mouse to work properly in it. In short; "Atlantis, The Lost Tales" was unplayable for me in it's original former glory. Until...

- For some reason, Windows 10 (64-bit) was more kind to my original version of Atlantis. I made one big mount of my 4 original CD's, used the programm 'DXWnd' to control the speed-issue, only installed the old savegame-patch from Cryo and I was good to go. I still had some crashes, but it was stable enough to enjoy my journey back to Atlantis again and create these videos for you. As far as I know, this is the only English playthrough available of the original Windows 95 version. It's here now in all its original splendour.
