Cute Soulslikes are all the rage these days, I hear, but why settle for crabs when you could have an angel armed with a plushie? We're checking out Plushie from the Sky, a recent release from Fishwind. You play an angel which has fallen from the sky into a world that starts out cute and charming but gets increasingly less so as you progress. The combat and leveling system are somewhat reminiscent of Souls games -- albeit without the grim and gritty aesthetic and maddening difficulty -- so you could see Plushie from the Sky as a kind of appetizer for people who are Souls-curious but feel too daunted to jump into the deep end just yet.

This is the dev's first game, and there are some rough edges that should be mentioned. I did end up clipped into terrain a few times and had to reload, and there were a couple spots where the physics went wonky and either I or an enemy found ourselves stuck in the sky. The game is also rather bite-sized -- I finished it in one six-hour sitting, and that was with a fair amount of wandering -- though that might be a positive depending on how much time you have to devote to the game. All told, Plushie from the Sky is a fun time. I appreciate the dev replicating some of the familiar mechanics from Souls games but also tuning the rest of the game to remove some of their grindier, more mind-numbing aspects. Give it a look if you're curious about taking your first steps into Souls and Soulslike games, or if you're just tickled by the thought of smacking around enemies with a series of plushies.
