Plutonia Experiment:Bad Reputation
...And so we reach the Final part of this series, The pain and the blood and the sweat and the tears has come to this, The final episode of Plutonia Experiment throttles us with "Slayer", This level stands out in my mind just like "The Twillight", and the 5 infamous maps of Plutonia Experiment for it's cruelty and sadistic nature, It's based off of Doom II's "Circle of Death" (or O' Of Destruction!) and is MUCH harder then before:Chaingunners, Revenants, Pain Elementals and scumbag terrain lowering traps, It's also another open shooting gallery like level that progresses differently vs Circle of Death.
"Impossible Mission" is a pretty ironic name, Plutonia does a few false swipes where it seems like it's easing up on you and the difficulty and then dumps you into a bed of broken glass, The level's a bit larger then most Plutonia Experiment maps up to this point, You'll have to backtrack a lot due to the size of this map, The Red key trap is certainly...mean, You get a Arch-Vile and a bunch of Barons Of Hell so I struggled here and then just ran like hell for the key, Yellow key is even worse as it has a switch puzzle to make it across a lowering bridge.
...And then we enter "Tombstone", NOW we are diving deep into pain, This map SUCKS even if you have ammo from a previous map, Tombstone is one of the most frustrating maps I've ever played in the official releases of Doom, It has so many hitscanners, pain elementals, and other dangerous monsters I don't even want to count...One room of this map has the downright MEANEST trap yet:Two pillars lower with Revenants and Arch-Viles, Another bad combination and I died as many times as you'd think.
"The Final Frontier", and "The Temple of Darkness" are two painful maps that couldn't be more different, Final Frontier is based on "The Living End" From Doom II and it is...not pleasant, You begin with a secret wall you can walk through for a megasphere and ammo which is something I didn't know about until recently, The beginning has 2 Arch-Viles in cages and you have to hop between narrow ledges, The area with the Cyberdemon is absolute madness...Those chaingunners were becoming unbearable, Temple of Darkness? What's better then being sniped by shotgunners at the start, dealing with teleporting hell knights in a small area with a rocket launcher and having to punch lost souls to death? Fuck it.
"Bunker" is a pretty forgettable map, It's a underground facility CRAWLING with enemies, It's not really that bad until running for the red key and blue key, This brings walls that lower to reveal...Chaingunners, Teleport traps with a Arch-Vile and Arachnotrons and some dubious ammo placements, The map that follows is really annoying, "Anti-Christ" is similar to Final Frontier but here it's turned up...to 11? Spawn traps? Yes. Chaingunners in windows or behind fake walls? Yes. Insane enemy stacking such as pain elementals and cacodemons? You bet, We also meet another Spider Mastermind but I didn't even bother and ran for the exit.
The two levels before the boss level, "The Sewers" and "Odyssey Of Noises" are the largest maps of Plutonia Experiment and couldn't be more different or intense:The Sewers are just as you expect, A long pathway through shit filled hallways loaded with monsters, harmful floor effects and more mean traps, The final part of the sewers is just sadistic:A Arch-Vile warps around before it appears in a pillar that has a hole in it, It can still hit you but you need to be close with the BFG to hit it, That shit annoys me, Odyssey Of Noises is a Massive city that looks much better then Doom II's city levels but can't beat any City made in a player made wad, It's harder then fuck and needs all 3 keys to exit, I had to pause during this final part of this series as I was getting tired and angry.
Finally, Finalfuckingly, We make it to "The Gateway To Hell", This is another Icon of Sin boss battle and it is much better then Icon of Sin from Doom II, It has one final nasty trap after you snag all weapons and a megasphere:Two arch-viles appear from pillars and it's not too bad, RNG will fuck you up here because a cyberdemon stands between you and the demon wall, RNG was fucking me so badly I got a bruised spine, and I ALWAYS reload if arch-viles appear because they make killing a Icon of Sin impossible, And thus, I am done with Plutonia Experiment on Ultra Violence pistol starting each level...I hope everyone enjoyed and maybe one day I'll pistol start on ultra violence TNT Eviltion and Doom II on the Doom Classic Unity Port.
