Rules

Beside the two classic rules there is a catch-limiting rule that only allow a max of 15 Pokemon to be caught, (giving a total of 16 Pokemon including the starter) as well as a series of rules determining roles for each catch.

Numbers

Throughout the entire run, you may only have One King, one Queen, two Bishops, two Knights, two Rooks and eight Pawns. This means you may only catch sixteen Pokemon in the entire run, so skip the first encounters you really don't want (that doesn't mean second chance on the route). You may only have one of each piece on your team at any time.

Roles

Each Pokemon you get must be given a role before being able to battle (not the instant they are caught):

King -Your starter must be the King. The King must always be in your party.
• If the King dies, it's game over.

Queen -Only female Pokemon may be the Queen.

• Optional: The Queen must be in the same egg group as the King

Bishop -May only have two damaging moves at any time.

Knight -May not use moves which have a base power greater than 60 (Before STAB).

Rook -May not use damaging moves with secondary effects on the enemy. They may use non-damaging moves, however. (For example: Rook can have Quick Attack because the effect doesn't penalize the enemy, and Stun Spore, because it doesn't do damage, but not Ember because it does damage and has negative effect on the enemy.)

Pawn -May not evolve ever. It also can't be a Pokemon that is already evolved upon capture or has no evolution.

• If a Pawn wins any major battle (Gym, Rival, E4) by itself, it can become a knight, bishop, rook or a Queen, the last only applies to female Pawns and only if there is no Queen (Or if the Queen is dead).

If I switch a pawn to a knight would i be able to catch another pawn if i have 8 pawns, the queen, the king, 2 rooks, 1 knight, and 2 bishops?

--POSSIBLE ANSWER (Someone verify please)--
To answer "your question specifically", a Pawn can only upgrade to a Knight if 1. it wins any major battle itself and 2. if 1 of your 2 Knights has died, OR 3. if you haven't caught all 16 chess pieces MAX AND 4. have NOT assigned a Knight/other role(s) who also has NOT died yet (There are 2 Knights, so you have freedom early in the game) ____________________
Good luck @SkullFace999 ! I can't wait to start ASAP. :D :D
I am going to try this with Pokemon Emerald!! Know what's Punny?
Making a Pawniard from Pokemon Black/White/2 a Pawn and not being able to evolve it into its epic evolution, Bisharp!! :D (What a loss)
I screen capture all my footage and have lost all my 4 attempts of a Randomized Emerald. Maybe it's my settings and my choices for the Randomizer tool? Even the movesets were random and the trainer's pokemon too.
Instead, I will only choose to randomize encounters and keep the starters for Chesslocke! I'll make Treecko the King (obviously! I'll choose not to randomize my starters) He'll sweep Roxanne if I grind him to Grovyle.
Also, I won't cheat my making TMs come in stacks of x95. I thought it would've been helpful because you only find 1 TM in the whole game without glitches/breeding, but I decided to sell about 60 TMs Detect and took advantage of the free cash to stock up on Potions and Pokeballs, X Stat items, basically everything cheap to not blow my $70,000. I failed anyway fighting Roxanne (Gym 1) in this last run, like every other fail so far, but all my attempts have been recorded, and I will fast forward heavily to trim down time and upload to Youtube.
Stay tuned. I will post here, if ya'll interested!
Good luck @skullface999 I see you here in 2020. Let's go! I don't know how to answer your question fully but I did my best given what I know.
Here's some extra tips
1. Like in chess, there are a total of 16 active pieces, so choose your Pokemon strategically if you know what Pokemon appear where. So, if a Pokemon dies and is sent to the PC/released, you have 1 less piece. I guess since a Pawn is the least powerful role, if it dies, you should not and cannot replace it, my thought (just as in real chess).
2. Have fun.
