Pokémon Blue 2 Player Mod Nuzlocke Part 4: Sometimes Two Controllers On One Game Is Bad...
Part 4: After some horrifying fights to start, we go sailing on a boat!
I am absolutely ecstatic to bring you this series of videos showcasing my battles against Mini_Lilly in Pokemon Blue! We used a mod to patch in two-player functionality. Lilly controls every single trainer, Gym Leader, and Rival fight, and suddenly, my quest across Kanto becomes harder than ever! We're also going with Nuzlocke rules, and here's what they are:
1. If a pokemon runs out of HP, it's dead for good. I have to store it in a box permanently, or release it.
2. I can only catch the first pokemon I see in a new route/area (after I get access to poke balls). If it runs, dies, or I run out of poke balls, then the catch is forfeit, and I can't catch anything else there. The one exception is the dupe clause, which means I can keep trying for a pokemon that I haven't caught yet. We'll see this get some heavy use halfway through the run.
3. I must name the pokemon to get more attached to them.
4. I cannot use any items in battle.
5. I have a level cap of two levels higher than the next Rival/Giovanni/Gym Leader fight. For example, I can't go over level 16 before beating Brock, who has a level 14 Onix. If a pokemon exceeds this, I must immediately stop using them until my level cap increases.
Now, for Lilly, here are the key points of her options:
1. Every pokemon a trainer has retains its original moves, but with the added bonus of not having dumb AI. They moves actually do have finite PP, unlike in vanilla Gen 1.
2. She can use any items that the trainers would already have.
She is still affected by the automatic 25% miss penalty for status moves.
3. She can switch her pokemon at will.
4. She has the added bonus of being able to see what I choose as my move first, before she chooses hers.
In Gen 1, many of the trainers don't have the best moves, but as you watch this challenge, you'll see that certain moves are complete destroyers of my team, and add many panic moments throughout. At the time of writing this, the challenge isn't over yet, so stay tuned to see if we can actually beat the game!
