While doing some research on Anabel on Bulbapedia, I was shocked to learn that there was some debate among Pokemon fans about Anabel being a boy or girl, but I can understand that, especially with her hairstyle and such. But I guess Anabel having a crush on Ash in the anime confirms the fact that she is female. Ash should have paid more attention to how she felt about him... What a loser.
