Video is just me showing off my Pokemon team. It probably isn't the best but it's mine at least. Now on to my opinions. I know, it would probably be better if I stated them in a video but like the Pokemon Company, I can't be bothered to make voice lines for this game.

Final Opinion: With no voice lines, only Battle Tower, a relatively small world, and a large number of lackluster moves, I cannot justify the price tag of this game. It's absolutely fine as a stand-alone Pokemon game as the formula is basically the same but fresh enough as it takes place in a different region with new faces, new Pokemon, and Dynamaxing. But as a full-price Nintendo Switch game in 2019/2020? I cannot recommend it. If you want to buy it despite that, go ahead: it was still fun for me.

First off, I really love the music in the game. From the wild Pokemon to the Battle Tower music, each track suits the occasion. They play enough times that you recognize them but switches regularly so that you aren't bored of them. Special encounters also get their own tracks like with the legendaries and the battle with Leon. My personal favourites are the gym battle and Marnie's regular themes.

I also think the graphics in the game are great. The animated style has always suited Pokemon and the graphics transition smoothly most of the time.

The story and gameplay intertwine nicely. Although exp share is necessary in this regard, different story events popped up regularly enough that you wouldn't be bored going from x gym to y gym with only wild Pokemon and random trainers in between. Different encounters with your rivals like Hop changed it up enough that you felt that you were progressing with no grinding necessary. The Pokemon and trainers you battled as you progressed also generally kept up (although I was a bit overlevelled at the beginning trying to catch all the different ones).

Regardless of how many Pokemon were taken away from previous generations, as a stand-alone title, I think it's a good game. If I was a newcomer to the Pokemon franchise and I played this game, I would probably enjoy it for the reasons stated above. Speaking only on my behalf, I didn't really miss the older generation Pokemon who did not make it into the game (ignoring the Pokemon DLC because it seems more of a ripoff than this game: MY WARGROOVE EXPANSION IS FREE) as it was a lot more exciting learning about the new Pokemon in this generation. The fact that all Pokemon can Dynamax in this game is also nice considering Pokemon-specific Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves.

My problem with this game however is the fact that I do not think Pokemon Shield is worth being a full-priced Switch game. Firstly, some of the Pokemon moves look somewhat bland. I mean, not all moves need to be Cinderace's Pyroball level, but the Pokemon should move more naturally for moves like Body Slam or at least move at all for moves like bite. Secondly, the size of the world and the amount of content just doesn't yell full price to me. The Wild Area is not small but it is by no means big. I'm no programmer, but with the cities, Wild Area, battles, and online features, I don't think it costs that much to make the game for how much they're selling it for. This style of Pokemon having four moves and taking turns to fight was done 20 years ago so I don't think it costs too much to do it nowadays. The story is also linear so it's not like the game has to take into account you going to random places where the Pokemon scale to your level or something like that.

In regards to personal gripes, why is it only Battle Tower again? I know I'm spoiled by Battle Frontier but come on. It would be so nice to have it in this latest Pokemon game, let alone if you could play it online against other players.

Finally, once again, why is there not voice acting in this game? The cut-scenes clearly have the characters moving their mouths so why are they not actually speaking their lines out loud? At least have the Gym Battle and Chairman Rose arc lines voiced or something.

Anyways, thanks for watching and reading and I'll see you next time (tomorrow in Advance Wars hopefully).
