Final, eighth gym leader of Johto, Clair. More difficult than the previous because the level gap is once again very apparent, and the typing of the enemies makes it difficult to strike a weakness and still see good damage numbers.

An important change is that once we reach Blackthorn City, which houses the eighth and final gym of Johto, we can access the other side of the Dark Cave which contain terrible monsters inside. Those monsters are far better than anybody else at dealing with the endgame bosses.

You guessed it, Wobbuffets. Very high HP even in spite of the low level, okay defences, and a lot of countering and revenge attacks, as well as Safeguard. Doing a Wobbuffet-only sweep of Clair is possible, albeit luck-reliant, seeing how her most powerful Pokemon alternates between Hyper Beam and special moves, making it impossible to select the right counter (plus I'm not awfully sure a Wobbuffet can even survive a Hyper Beam). In this fight, I experiment with them a bit because I do plan to take a couple along to the elite four (it's THAT difficult without legendaries that you need some extra strategies) to see if they could somehow improve my chances of getting through.

Besides the mighty Kingdra, Clair also has 3 Dragonairs. The first one knows Surf, and she has two more who know Thunderbolt and Ice Beam respectively. We can have icepunching Slowking 3HKO one of the Dragonairs that doesn't have Thunderbolt, but the other two can be dealt with the help of Wobbuffets.

As for Kingdra, my strategy is to have Gyarados wear it down with Leers (Red Gyara is surprisingly durable even this far into the game), then die to a Hyper Beam. Kingdra is recharging, and the same turn Golem comes in and blows up in its face. It's cute, really.

And finally, the eight badges of Johto are ours! On to the E4 we go.
