Fourth battle against the rival. He's levelled his Pokemon quite a bit since our last meeting and his party now features the laughable Sneasel.

For rival battles mid to endgame, one thing should be remembered: the only difficulty they pose is the amount of annoying tactics involved. Sleep, confusion (especially confusion actually), flinching, accuracy falls... All those things WE relied on in the beginning of the challenge to get this far are now used against us very consistently.

Sudowoodo, who swept the rival's team last time we met, does not really handle this anymore due to the level difference. Sneasel has a 4x weakness to fighting plus has disastrous defences, and yet Low Kick from Sudowoodo just barely 2HKOs him. He fails to take on Quilava too (but mostly due to the Smokescreen spam), so I have Slowking finish it.

We're slowly approaching Clair, the last gym leader in Johto, and our party is about to see serious changes. I'm going to try beating the maingame without legendaries, though I can't guarantee the probability of success isn't astronomical (somebody like Lance is quite intimidating even with the most advantageous tactics and best IVs on the best non-legendaries applied).

It's good that the game will get harder as we reach the most exciting battles of course.

Speaking of the legendaries, just by loafing around and grinding I already have all three dogs (for Raikou and Suicine, I kept resetting until I had the stats I wanted just in case I might be forced to use them later). Still haven't passed the elite four but made some test attempts and it's definitely harder than the past gym battles by a long shot.
