Pokemon Yellow - 0 Exp Part 2: Jessie & James
First battle against Jessie and James, who only appear in the Yellow version and not in Red/Blue. They're inserted into the game rather poorly, if you ask me, but this particular battle was worth sharing, I thought.
In the grassy area before Mt. Moon and within the place, you can catch some pretty good Pokemon which are very useful in this battle and the ones briefly ahead. Higher-levelled Rattatas, Spearows, plus Geodudes who tank hits very well if there's a necessity (though without any good moves and at a level disadvantage Geodude can't solo the likes of Rattata who has stat lowering moves and crits often).
I suppose you could say a crucial thing to do at this point is to catch a Clefairy at the highest level available and evolve it with a Moon Stone ASAP for a good effect. I taught it Water Gun right there to cover the Hikers' Geodudes and Onixes that are really prominent at this point - the TM stops being useful since you get Bubblebeam and eventually also Surf with its infinite losses, so it's a TM I probably won't regret spending early.
Jessie and James aren't that easy actually. Ekans seems to have a speed tie with our Clefairy, sometimes outspeeding us, sometimes not. If Ekans goes first and uses Wrap, he must prevent us from moving altogether so it's a good idea to put it to sleep first.
Meowth gets STAB on his attacks and his attacks are often critical hits due to the way criticals are generated in RBY - higher base speed means higher chances of getting a crit. I got lucky here with reducing his accuracy to such an extent that he couldn't finish me off, so Pidgeotto just chipped away at him until he dies.
Koffing has high physical defence and Clefable struggles to solo him. I used a higher-level Mankey here to Leer his defence down, then finished him off quickly.
Basically, Clefable is really good at this point against trainers and whatnot, but it can't really take on parties of multiple Rattatas or anything of that calibre, pretty much needing Sand-Attack support to really work. She also isn't able to take on Misty's Starmie because of Harden/X Defend being in the way. We have a different strategy for Misty though.
