Pokémon Unite is a free-to-play online battle arena video game developed by TiMi Studio Group and released by The Pokémon Company for Android and iOS, as well as Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. On June 24, 2020, it was revealed during a Pokémon Presents presentation. On July 21, 2021, the game was released for the Nintendo Switch; it will be released for Android and iOS in September 2021. TiMi intends to integrate cross-platform play between the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices by March 2021.
Pokémon Unite is a multiplayer online battle arena game in which two teams of five players compete in matches. The game map is divided into two halves, each with several control points. By beating non-player character "wild" Pokémon and moving towards one of the control points, players earn points for their team. If a player is hit while scoring, they will be paused and will have to try again. Stronger wild Pokémon will come at specific periods during each match. When one of these Pokémon is beaten, the player who defeated it will receive a special effect based on whatever Pokémon was defeated. Each match is timed, and the team with the highest overall score at the conclusion of each match wins.
Each player takes possession of a Pokémon that is quite weak at the start of the game. By winning individual battles inside the match, the Pokémon may become stronger and gain access to new combat techniques. The "type" system, which is analogous to rock paper scissors and affects each Pokémon's efficacy against other Pokémon in prior Pokémon games, is removed from Pokémon Unite. The game does, however, introduce a new concept known as "Unite moves," which are combat techniques that are unique to each Pokémon.
