Control is an action-adventure video game released by 505 Games and developed by Remedy Entertainment. The game is set in the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a top-secret US government agency tasked with containing and researching anomalies that defy reality's laws. As Jesse Faden, the Bureau's new Director, the player must explore the Oldest House - the FBC's paranormal headquarters β and use incredible skills to battle a dangerous enemy known as the Hiss, who has infiltrated and corrupted reality. Finding Artifacts of Power, mundane objects imbued with energy from another dimension such as a rotary phone or a floppy disc that have been at the centre of big paranormal events and collected by the FBC, grants the player skills.
Control is based on paranormal stories about the fictional SCP Foundation, which were generated by an internet collaborative-fiction effort based on the new weird genre. The Oldest House's landscapes are based on brutalist architecture, which is common in oppressive government structures and acted as a backdrop for the game's devastating environmental systems.
Control is a Metroidvania game with a big world area that can be explored nonlinearly, unlike Remedy's prior games, which were mostly linear. As the player progresses through the main storey missions, they will come across Control Points, which can be unlocked after clearing the area of opponents and then used as both save points and fast transit points around the building to previously unlocked Control Points. As the player completes assignments, they gain access to more areas of the building, as well as additional side quests and rewards. These include skill points that can be utilised to increase Jesse's psychokinetic abilities, such as projectile-launching debris at adversaries or momentarily capturing control of enemies' thoughts to turn them into her allies. Mission rewards may also include resources that can be utilised to increase the operation of the Service Weapon, a unique weapon that can take on a variety of forms, ranging from a close-range shotgun-like blast to a long-range sniper-like form, each with its own set of benefits. Jesse's base qualities can be improved by equipping perks.
