In case you're wondering why my team is always overleveled past the Gym Leader's Ace, it's because this game takes a page from Gen 7's book and gives the trainers Pokemon IVs and DVs.

Bugsy's gotten a huge buff from his rather unimpressive outing in Crystal Version, gaining Butterfree (now a Bug/Psychic type focused purely on its special stats), Beedrill (with buffed physical stats and speed), and Yanma. While Yanma's annoying if you take too long to take it out, Butterfree and Scyther are the big issues here.

As usual, Fire and Rock types are the way to go here. Spearow isn't in this hack, so the best Flying types you have up to this point are Pidgeotto and Hoothoot who are...rather unimpressive right now. Geodude puts in work as long as Butterfree's out of the picture, and Growlithe and Vulpix are both available above the Ruins of Alph (Morning and Day for Growlithe, Night for Vulpix). Onix is a choice to take on Scyther, since its huge Defense stat'll pull it through just fine. In addition, if you use a Fire type, pick up a Charcoal over at the Poke Mart; they're only 1000 Poke to pick up and provide an extra boost to your Fire moves.

For my strategy, I wanted to keep Growlithe in the back until I could get Butterfree out of the picture. I knew Growlithe would be the key to winning this battle, so I couldn't have it get Poisoned by Butterfree if I wanted to win. I could have probably just pressed Flame Wheel to win in hindsight though...
