About this video: Learning how to port forward a Minecraft server is a necessary step if you are hosting a Minecraft server on your own computer and want your friends to join it. This is a quick guide on how to port forward a Minecraft server, but we recommend checking out our in-depth guide for more details.

As far as port forwarding goes, start off by opening up the command prompt on your computer. Then, in the CMD, type “ipconfig” and hit enter. This will give you some numbers. Make note of your IPv4 and default gateway.

Type your default gateway into a browser and hit enter. This will open your router. You’ll need to login to your router. Then, once you are in your router, locate port forwarding. This could be in apps and gaming, an admin or advanced section, a security tab, or somewhere else in your router.

Once you find it add a new port forward. Name it anything you’d like, and set the protcol to be both TCP and UDP. For anything involving the word “port” type “25565”. For your IP address enter the IPv4 address we found earlier or select the device you are making the server on.

Save the port forward, and you are done! Your friends can now join using your public IP address!
