I see a lot of players even at Challenger ELO leave their Alistar in the middle hex and never move him. He will always charge through his target so you can exploit his positioning by facing him away from your team.

On the flip side, if you're playing Alistar make sure you pay attention to him during fights and move him if he isn't stunning a lot of units :)
