*the seat in the lobby was cold and slick. Eva always hated metal chairs. By always, she meant from the earliest memories she had of them. When Eva was two, she was forced to sit on a metal bench in the city. It was mid-winter and below freezing. The steel was so cold that it easily penetrated her sweatpants. When she tried to get up, her hand stuck to the bench. Her mother forced her to sit back down on the horrid thing, while she fished for something in her purse.
Eva decided to stand while she waited for James to finish what he was doing and clock out for the day.
At half past six, he came charging through the hall. Eva quickly blocked his path, he tried to evade her but she was in synce with his steps.
"We need to talk.", Eva stated calmly. Her voice was flat, but carried an underone of a seriousness that came along with the news of one's death.
"What do you want?", James snapped back, his left eye twitching as he spoke.
"I didn't forget what happened.", Eva replied.
"What are you talking about?"
"Don't play dumb. I know what happened before you put me under. I didn't forget."
James leaned in close and replied in a sickeningly arrogant tone, "If you were confident in what happened, you would have told your daddy by now. You aren't sure of what happened and that's understandable. Many people don't recall things, as a side effect of the anesthesia. You'll be fine."
"Telling my father now would get you fired, but I don't want that. You need this job, and I need something from you. How about we work together?"
James narrowed his eyes. "What are you trying to pull? If you believe what you are hinting at, you wouldn't want to work with me."
The sound of a door opening halted the conversation. Both Eva and James turned their attention to the source of the sound. Kimberly, James sister, had just come out of the restroom. She pulled at her white blouse, adjusting it.
"James, what's she doing here?"
"Nothing. She thought she left something behind last week and came by to pick it up. Sadly, I haven't seen it.", he explained. He shot Eva a warning glance. "I have to go now, Miss []. I'm sorry, but you'll have to search elsewhere for your bracelet. Might I suggest you wear less jewelry to your next appointment, or have your friends hold on to your things, perhaps? Actually, did you consider that one of them might have taken it?"
Eva scoffed at his remark. She opened her mouth to speak, but he didn't allow her to form the words, before charging for the door.
Eva watched him leave then turned her attention to Kim. Kim smirked.
"Hello, Eva. It's been a long time since our last chat. How's Semele doing?"
