Powers, Puzzles And 5 Ways Trine 4 Is Making Trine Good Again
After the stunted Trine 3, we thought Trine was done. But here is Trine 4 to say otherwise, with more puzzles, more players and a clever approach to co-op levels that promise to make Trine good again. We’ve seen Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince gameplay in action on PC, and bring you these impressions. Enjoy.
The Trine 4 release date is Autumn 2019, so there’s still a bit of time to go, but so far, Frozenbyte’s new puzzle platformer looks like a return to the glory days of Trine 2. This isn’t a Trine 4 review, I should add - these are hands off impressions from a recent preview event. We will have a Trine 4 PC review when the game surfaces later in the year.
So, what do our Trine 4 impressions look like: this is a return to the 2.5d world, getting rid of the 3D levels of Trine 3 for a traditional jaunt through a flattened fantasy. And Trine 4’s graphics are very pleasant, thanks to updates to Frozenbyte’s in-house engine. It means it will feel familiar to long term fans: rooms full of physics enabled puzzles, solved by Pontius the knight, Zoya the thief and Amadeus the wizard.
Our returning heroes have new Trine 4 powers: Zoya’s frozen arrows lock platforms in place, Amadeus’ metal ball lets him roll over spikes and Pontius gets a reflective shield. Trine 4 co-op revolves around clever interplay between these powers, and it’s even smarter than before thanks to the way Trine 4’s levels adapt to fit the number of players. Play alone and the environment gives you more help; play with pals and the scenery changes to fit.
Elsewhere in our Trine 4 preview you’ll see new boss encounters that are built around better puzzles, and we break down character upgrades and how puzzles are changing for the better. No more box mountains to spam to victory. We loved Trine 1 and 2 back in the day so it makes us very happy to see Frozenbyte back doing what they do best. Of course, we have to go hands-on with it ourselves to see if it properly holds up.
Until Trine 4’s release date I hope this video acts as a helpful introduction to the game and explains how the series is getting its act together.
