Delayed from 2018, Code Vein resurfaces, letting us take on a new boss fight, tinker with the amazing character creation, team up with two companions and get to grips with the game described as anime Dark Souls. Enjoy this new Code Vein gameplay as we explain the best and worst Code Vein features.

This isn’t our final Code Vein review - we’ve only played the first two hours of the game - but we can offer some Code Vein impressions. The game takes a lot of cues from Dark Souls, but mixes up the formula in key ways. Character creation and customisation is the flavour of the day, with both Code Veins character creator and the ability to shape combat potential by teaching new skills to Blood Codes (Code Vein’s version of character classes). We don’t go too deep into codes in our first two hours, though the new Code Vein boss fight lets us put a tasty poison blade to the test. Code Vein combat is pretty easy to get your head around, but it has a couple of distinct quirks.

Elsewhere in our Code Vein preview we test the companion system - think of this as single player co-op. Of course, proper Code Vein coop is promised with online play, too. A big focus is on teaming up with NPC friends to fight enemies. Working with Code Vein companions is like a more fully fleshed version of Dark Souls NPC summons, though we do wonder if its a miss opportunity that we can’t give our friends more guidance in battle. They are left to their own devices, which feels a little undercooked. Perhaps having more companions to pick from will see more strategy come into play, but that will have to wait for a later Code Vein review.

In between the new Code Vein boss fight and exploring the depths I got to work on my character creation and development, learning to use the blood veil to increase ichor supplies and trying to keep my haze supplies safe to buy new skills. I’m less sure about the Code Vein story - the game is more explicit than Dark Souls in how it tells its story, but I still came away baffled by lots of it. Maybe it’s a mystery to be unpicked, or maybe it’s just bad storytelling. Time will tell. We also didn’t get to test online Code Vein co-op - the game will let you summon friends into your world to help, but this has yet to be tested. One for our next Code Vein gameplay dump, hopefully.

I hope you find this Code Vein video helpful - if you have any questions about features i’ve mentioned in the Code Vein demo, or any features I’ve not covered, just ask in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them. Hopefully I’ve covered all the basics. The Code Vein release date is later in 2019, so not a huge amount of time to tweak the game - after Code Vein delayed once, it has to come out eventually. Stick with Rock Paper Shotgun and we'll have a Code Vein PC review for you closer to the time. Thanks for watching and hopefully see you around soon.
