Powerslide (1998) - PC Futuristic Racing Games
Powerslide by Ratbag Games / GT Interactive, 1998.
One of my three holy-trinity of futuristic racing games from 1998 (the others being Dethkarz and Motorhead), this is a fantastic rally-style futuristic racing game set in a post-apocalyptic/techno world.
Programmed by Ratbag Games, an Australian development team who went on to make a series of Dirt Track Racing games, it feels somewhat Mad Max at times, and the vehicles include an Aussie style Ute pickup. The soundtrack even brings in some aggressive didgeridoo on one stage!
It's got a lovely warped sense-of-humour, both in the line-up of racers and the hidden cheats dotted around the circuits (often in really hard-to-reach places). Even more memorable and amusing is that you're awarded a piece of fruit when you win a championship, as fruit is like gold dust in this sort of apocalyptic environment!
It's not without some issues though, if you roll or tip your vehicle, the front and/or back wheels can appear thorough your car for the rest of the race. And quitting a race is very difficult, as it keeps throwing you back into the game, unless you whizz your mouse around as the menu loads and you get lucky!
Here I'm trying each of the cars in the game here on each of the tracks (apart from the sandbox Stunts stage). I've even included the amusing Luge stage with a ski jump at the end!
Did you play this one? Enjoy it?
