The sequel to "The Super Mario Movie" (2004), it is the second Nintendo film to be produced by Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks and the fourth Nintendo Animation film to be produced by Village Roadshow Pictures and the second Nintendo film to be co-produced by Kingdom Entertainment. It is also the final Nintendo Animation film to use the 1998-2008 Roadshow Animation logo. As of September 13, 2021, Universal Pictures now owns "The Super Mario Movie" (2004) and its sequels, along with "Mario & Luigi: The Movie" and "Mario & Luigi 2: The Sacred Stones", to tie-in to the production of Illumination's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie", which is scheduled to be released on April 7, 2023. The streaming service for this film and its sequels were moved from Paramount+ to Peacock on October 7, 2022.
