This was the first Nintendo Animation film to use CGI and the sixth Nintendo film overall following The Stacey Movie" (2004). It is also the start of the Super Mario Movie tetralogy, with "The Super Mario Movie 2: Level Up!" (2008), "The Super Mario Movie 3: Bowser's Revenge" (2011) and "The Super Mario Movie 4: The Grand Showdown in the Mushroom Kingdom" (2015). This is also Nintendo Animation's first co-production with Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures and the third co-production with Village Roadshow Pictures, as well as the first Nintendo film to be co-produced by Kingdom Entertainment. As of September 13, 2021, Universal Pictures now owns this film and its sequels, along with "Mario & Luigi: The Movie" and "Mario & Luigi 2: The Sacred Stones", to tie-in to the production of Illumination's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie", which is scheduled to be released on April 7, 2023. The streaming service for this film and its sequels were moved from Paramount+ to Peacock on October 7, 2022.
