We're continuing on with the final video of the Unsouled Demo. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish it before it went offline.

Initial Impression:
The Good:
The Training Mode is very welcome and even gives you some rewards for finishing the missions!

It has an interesting core idea that has simliarites with Onimusha but with expanded combat.

The (seemingly) Bad:
Unsouled is an interesting concept but the combat feels very rigid.
Following up an attack with a dash is extremely difficult if the enemy isn't in one of the cardinal directions.
This issue could be rolled into one single problem: The lack of targeting. You have to make precise directional inputs to successfully follow up your combo attacks. In many cases this is very unintuitive.
Games like Dusk Diver, Ys: Memories of Celceta and Warriors like games have an easy system that automatically targets the enemy by simply keeping your stick at neutral.

Speaking of unintuitive, there's no invincibility after getting hit. You HAVE TO spend one of your orbs for the special dodge but it requires to input the LT and RT together. It might only be a small but considering that LT isn't used in combat it will take some time to get input into muscle memory.

Another issue is the very strict timing of the counter attack follow ups. You've seen a lot of counters in the footage but nearly never a follow up, which is because I wasn't able to find the timing.
This dovetails into crowd control. The easiest way would be counter + follow ups but there's a huge executional barrier. Next up, would be the special move that requires an orb but there are a lot of times where you can get hit before your move comes out.

This is just my first impression. It might seem overly negative but that's because I couldn't give it another shot in trying other ideas due to the demo being expired. It will be interesting to see how the game will turn out.

Release date: Planned for Autumn 2020
