Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - The RETROspective
230People often ask me what my favourite games of all-time are. I don't really keep a definitive personal ranking outside of the top two games that I've ever played. The one that unquestionably tops the list is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Nowadays, it feels like the action-adventure video game genre is pretty standard. It's fairly standard platforming broken up by intermittent bouts of combat. What if I told you that I found the game that revolutionized the genre and became the game that the likes of Uncharted, Tomb Raider and more copied en route to their own success? By taking classic ideas and pairing them with brand new ideas, Ubisoft Montreal was able to create a game that may have had a bigger impact on modern gaming than we could have appreciated in 2003.
In this episode of the RETROspective, I look back at the Prince of Persia franchise from its creation through to the launch of The Sands of Time. Then I review this game and explain what made it revolutionary in 2003 and allows it to still be one of the greatest games that I've ever played even 19 years later.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is an action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and Windows PC. Another game called Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released for the Game Boy Advance. It was re-released in 2006 on PlayStation 2 and 2009 on Windows PC in the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Trilogy. A remastered version of the game was released in 2010 as part of the Prince of Persia Trilogy HD.
The Sands of Time is the fourth game released in the mainline Prince of Persia franchise. It followed 1989's Prince of Persia, 1993's Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame and 1999's Prince of Persia 3D. It is also the first game in what is colloquially referred to as The Sands of Time trilogy that includes this game, Warrior Within, The Two Thrones and The Forgotten Sands.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time stars you as an unnamed prince. Having helped your father's army sack a kingdom, you take one prize for yourself: The Dagger of Time. However, this starts a chain of events that see time itself corrupt a neighbouring kingdom leaving you and a captive of that sacked kingdom to reverse time's revenge while an evil vizier tries to thwart you.
