Probotector 2 (Contra 3: Alien Wars) - Gameboy - Boss Run
Ah yes, the long awaited Super Probotector... Boss... Run.
Oh wait. This is the Gameboy version. :E
This is played on the game's highest difficulty. No cheats or tool assistance used (and it clearly shows in places. :P)
This is the European version of the Gameboy port of Contra 3: The Alien Wars. As a result the main characters have been replaced with robots. Don't ask. Blame the Germans.
So why did I record this? It's just a little filler run.
Unlike the original Probotector Gameboy Game (which was a new game with a remixed soundtrack), this is obviously a watered down port of Super Probotector (Contra 3). They of course had the nerve to call it Probotector 2 to get a few more sales out of it from idiots who thought it was a new game.. ... yeah.
Still this has ironically seen more playtime from me than the original SNES version, simply because it's sometimes easier to play the gameboy than pull out the SNES. :P
As far as Gameboy games go, it isn't as good as the first Probotector game, but it isn't bad if you look at it from the perspective of the developers - they tried to recreate something as brilliant as Super Probotector/Contra 3, and in some places succeeded, and in others... such as the boss rush, failed.
I'm not sad to see the original Stage 4 go (it was my least favourite level with my least favourite boss in any Contra game.) and the way they handled the overhead stages, actually made them more playable in my opinion (and less dizzying for certain. :P)
The loss of no less than 5 bosses from the final stage, as well as a few mini-bosses scattered about, (and.. Robo Corpse.. dying in a few seconds flat.) is the main kicker how-ever.
It's not as good as the SNES version, but as it's own game, its still fairly decent. The player character is a little sluggish, but that seems to affect a lot of GB games.
Ironically, the Spread gun is pretty useless on the higher difficulty, with enemies having more health than usual, and as a result you need a powerful weapon to get through the levels. Maniac mode is very unforgiving, with it only giving you two lives and no continues (there are passwords though, which kind of eliminate the point of continues.) and stronger enemies, but the bosses remain unaffected.
Unlike most of my Probotector / Contra videos, I actually managed to get the credits in - just. I had to cut some footage here and there to get it to fit, but I managed it.
