Project Altered Beast - Steam Deck/PS2 Gameplay - Area 1 & 2

Little remains of the truly wild atmosphere of the original in this full 3D reimagining of the SEGA classic 1988 platform-beat’em-up based on mutations and mythological fantasy. However, if you’re willing to overlook this and the technically uneven execution in terms of visual clarity and polygonal complexity, you’ll find an honest brawler with its own charm.
Manually skipping the well-craftedpre-rendered transformation sequence into a Werewolf (the first and only available transformation in the two areas of this gameplay) quickly becomes tedious, and the menus, where you’ll often find yourself saving or accessing Gene Manipulation to upgrade your moveset, are clunky and far from elegant.
The combat system, while simple, gives reason for cautious optimism as the adventure progresses, especially since it’s already clear that each mutation will bring its own set of spectacular, gore-filled, dismemberment-heavy moves. Defeating the first boss, the giant mutant rat called Leviathan, wasn’t easy and required multiple attempts (which I spared you by cutting them), but I admit I played it somewhat distractedly and without much enthusiasm.
Still, the curiosity to see the upcoming transformations—just like in the 1988 ancestor—remains.
