Project Razer (a.k.a Project Blade): Removing and Reapplying Thermal Paste
G_f_i is excited to produce its fourth project video "Project Razer (a.k.a. Project Blade): Removing and Reapplying Thermal Paste" In this video Joe, "Innovator and Eccentric Geek," removes the bottom of Razer Blade (first generation) 14 inc. (2013) to change the thermal paste on both the computer processing unit (CPU), an i7 4702HQ @ 2.2GHz 6MB Cache processor, and the graphics processing unit (GPU), a NVIDIA 765m.
Special thanks to Dan, "the 80s White Hat Wiz Kid." He put this video together for our channel. Dan has moved us along to have yet another awesome video for our viewers within the Project playlist.
Temperatures:
Mobile computers, laptops and notebooks, typically run higher temperatures than computers, desktops. Mobile computers are accustomed to using airflow technology (however now there are upgrades so that mobile computers can have liquid cooling). Below are Joe's recommendations for temperatures running on a laptop and notebook.
Intel CPU - Joe recommends this processor's temperatures to run within the range of 40 to 60 (up to 69) degrees celsius. Idle temperatures should extend within the 40 to 50 range (approximate 50). Temperatures for under load (e.g. gaming) should extend between the upper 50s to upper 60s. Anything above 70 degrees celsius - consider first getting better airflow below your computer (like a cooler master cooling mat).
NVIDIA GPU - Joe recommends this processor's temperatures to run within the range of 50 to upper 70s degree celsius; however, with mobile computers it is much harder due to designs to get GPU temperatures capped at below 80 degrees. Temperatures under load should run anywhere in the 70s if sufficient cooling and airflow technology is used. GPUs start to falter (e.g. visibility of artifacts like tearing occur even with vertical sync set to adaptive or on within NVIDIA 3D settings). Anything above 80 degrees celsius - consider first getting better airflow below your computer (like a cooler master cooling mat). Capping the frame rate and lowering the texture settings within the game and/or NVIDIA 3D settings will help. Consider, also, ensuring that the computer is using the latest or computer manufacturer recommended NVIDIA driver (see Razer driver Database and/or Geforce Experience in Helpful Links).
BOTH: Updating the firmware of the basic input output system (BIOS) can help manage temperatures for both CPU and GPU. Check the socket firmware for the Intel CPU using the Intel Driver Update Utility (see Helpful Links) can help as well for both.
Thermal Paste Application:
Remove the old thermal paste application prior to application of new thermal paste (don't put new thermal paste over old thermal paste). Joe prefers to use the dot method to apply thermal paste on CPU and even GPU processors; however, the dot method (where you put one dot in the center of the processor) is not the only method. There is, also, the line method (spread a thin line across the processor vertical).
