Project Space Station (Apple II, 1985) part zero: the test run
The one that started it all! Kind of. This was a dummy run that convinced me I needed to tighten things up before moving on to the part one that has been posted, and until now this video has been unlisted and open only to Patreon subscribers and a few other trusted individuals who were able to give me some pre-launch advice. I still haven't learned to shave before every show. Below are my original notes to those parties.
---
Shot & recorded with the standard built-in Windows 10 camera and game record functions, edited & assembled in VSDC Video Editor (free version at http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor ).
In-show music by Kasatochi (http://www.thelogbook.com/kasatochi/ ); credits music by Teleidofusion, via the Free Music Archive ( http://www.freemusicarchive.org ).
Areas for improvement in future attempts:
* I don't have to be on camera the whole time. Put some facts and figures in that vertical strip: what was the real fastest turnaround time for a space shuttle? What other games did HES release?
* Maybe shut up and play some of those wonderful public domain NASA public info films that promised the shuttle would all but save the world.
* Get a decent scan from the book rather than holding it up to the camera.
* Find an uncorrupted disk image maybe? I mean, the Homestar/"fhqwhgads" references are funny, but...
* Shave.
* May have to turn off the space heater and don the Cloak of Geekitude or the Cloak of Additional Geekitude. I don't know if you guys pick up on it, but I hear it roaring away in the background.
Tech notes:
Quite a bit more promising than I thought it'd be. I just downloaded/learned how to use VSDC last night (or, strictly speaking, at about 1:30 this morning); as soon as I have $20 on me, I think stepping up to the paid version will be a wise investment. It's not Avid, but unlike Avid Media Composer First (or Xsplit for that matter), it actually runs on the hardware I have available to me.
Apologies for the somewhat quiet delivery, this was recorded while everyone else in the house was asleep. Need to get acoustic foam mounted to the wall directly behind the computer. Audio was recorded from the webcam mic rather than the Blue Yeti.
I'm surprised and pleased at how well the PC handled recording me and the game at the same time. (Not to mention playing a random Kasatochi playlist while the game was running.) Xsplit's site would have you believe that this is impossible without (a) the paid version of their software and (b) a machine with at least core i5 specs. I'm very much winging this with (a) the gear I've already got, (b) a less than ideal recording space, and (c) a budget of $0 + whatever comes in via Patreon, T-shirt sales, and various affiliate programs' revenue. All of that considered... I'm probably more pleased with the result than I may be making it sound.
