What is Patreon and why is it growing on Youtube?

Patreon is a subscription service which Youtubers use to encourage viewers to subscribe and pay them a monthly fee in order to support their content.
Personally I think most users of this charge FAR too much, sometimes even asking for $5 per video uploaded.
BUT, if used in the correct way, I believe this is a very durable way of increasing Youtubers income, and with the addition of a reward based system, rewarding for the subscribers.
