(PS2 60fps) KOF 99 NESTS Collection "Dreamcast" version - modes & stuff ~ The KO #152
Checking out main, "Dreamcast" version of The King of Fighters '99 included in The King of Fighters NESTS Collection on Japanese PS2:
0:08 - Options (showing my settings, not the defaults)
0:18 - Practice (no ability to KO opponents as you can in the version of KOF 2000 in this collection; and I don't show it, but all 2P character can do is Stand, Jump, or Crouch)
1:23 - in-game move list
1:50 - Team Play (Roulette as Kim, Andy, Yuri - vs difficulty 8 Chang this went extremely poorly : o)
5:17 - Survival: Time Attack (as Xiangfei; notice that Survival modes do not obey options like Supers off)
8:43 - Survival: Endless (as Kyo-1; ended early : P)
11:35 - Single All (as Kyo-2, Dark Syo striker)
28:47 - Single Play (Roulette)
33:43 - Single Vs. (just to make sure there's no VS CPU option--there isn't : P)
I'm going to have to try more of this "Single All" mode (11:35)--one-round battles, can turn Supers off, and isn't too bad with flash FX--would be even better in that regard if I turned off Strikers, which in this game tend to create a super-like black screen flash, but maybe I'd get bored without them. Anyway the flashes aren't as bad in this "Dreamcast" version as they are in the "NEOGEO" version ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o12JG9xjnvI ): black screen flashes aren't quite fully opaque, for instance, shadows don't flicker, and stages FX like the lightning flashes in the museum are toned down. So anyhow an accessible, fast-paced mode, neat stuff! The difficulty isn't quite as high as I'd like, maybe, but I did get lucky quite a few times, and also I'd happened to pick a striker--Dark Syo--who turned out to be pretty super duper powerful, exploding into people with his motorcycle and all (the CPU just couldn't seem to block this ... it isn't unblockable, is it?).
Which reminds me, the combat is kinda clunky in a few ways compared to 2000. You can't activate strikers while jumping, which in 2000 is my favorite time to activate them, crossing up the opponent. : P Might not even work when you're just walking left/right. Also, can take your character a weirdly long time to turn around.
Kind of a proto 2000 in some regards. But 2000 doesn't have a Single All mode! Some nice smooth AST tracks in this one, too.
Recorded 10/14/19 w/ PS2, OSSC, Framemeister, Elgato HD60.
