(PS3 60fps) CvS2 - 1500 Groove Points, beating S. Akuma & unlocking Boss Battle Mode 1/8/17
Playing Arcade Mode in the PS2 Classics version of "Capcom vs. SNK 2" on PS3, reaching the secret boss, Shin Akuma ("S. Akuma"), and, having already beaten the other secret boss, U. Rugal (which one you encounter seems to be more or less random), consequently unlocking "Boss Battle Mode."
To reach Shin Akuma or Ultimate Rugal, you pretty much either have to earn 1500 "Groove Points" while playing through Arcade Mode prior to reaching the boss stage, or you have to get a "Finest KO," which is achieved by certain obscure combinations of landing a rare move while the enemy is doing a rare move. I'm not clever enough to do that by anything other than sheer luck (and I did manage to reach U. Rugal that way!--see my U. Rugal video : D), so even though I'm terrible at the game (I was playing on difficulty 1, incidentally), I figured my only chance to reach S. Akuma was by earning 1500 Groove Points.
The math behind how Groove Points are earned or lost during and after matches is pretty involved and not really balanced; for a long time I was trying to do it by getting Perfects (defeating the opponent without having let them damage you--I was spamming fireballs with Sagat : P) and by killing them with a Super move--those give you bonus Groove Points, but not all that many, really, and I wasn't nearly 100% with my ability to pull them off in a match, so although I tried for hours and hours, I still wasn't quite earning enough to get to 1500 points before the boss stage.
Finally, having read on Gamefaqs how the Groove Point scoring actually works, I realized that you can earn Groove Points during a match by doing combo moves. SNK's "King" character has a move, "Trap Shot" (although I could swear she says "Crack Shot" when she does it : P), which, once it connects, automatically launches into a 12-hit combo, which earns you 11.5 Groove Points; if you do that over and over against the opponents through 3 on 3 battles in Arcade Mode, you'll have way more than 1500 points by the time you reach the boss stage--and thus you'll face S. Akuma or U. Rugal!
So here I was up against S. Akuma. It took me a few tries, but really he wasn't that bad--on the lowest difficulty. : P
Now I just have to beat Boss Battle... ;_;
