Just a quick video of a little footage I got while slightly modding my PS3. After 3-4 hours of play it was getting pretty hot and sometimes in select games was freezing up. Although I couldn't be sure it was the heat causing these freeze ups, I figured it couldn't hurt to replace the thermal paste and cut a hole for the fan. I think the design not having a hole for the fan is poor design. More than likely it's designed to fail so you have to buy a new model or the next generation. I used an old KMC magnetic dust filter from an old case, Corsair 500R. I cut using an exact knife and glued using some regular hot glue. In the future I may get a different case and do the same mod. Next time I'll be more careful not to scratch the front face of the case AND grind down the surface that prevented me from gluing the dust filter flat. It is still very functional but it is by no means perfect. I would also recommend using something better to cut a perfect circle, either a knock out kit or perhaps a fine hole saw. Not sure on either, just trying to think of things better than free hand for making a perfect circle. This is probably my second time using a dremel and I'm not very good at it. I turned the fan down about 25% before testing. I did not leave it at the DB level in the video. I'm not a fan (ha) of the jet engine noise level. However by replacing the old thermal paste with artic silver AND being able to slightly increase the speed of the fan AND by cutting the hole to allow for better airflow AND replacing an old fan with new... I was able to drop temps by roughly 20c. Not too shabby. Tested for 2-3 hours in Dishonored prior to taking a quick video of the temps. Normally it would be sitting around 60c or higher unfortunately.
