There are some design cues in the clothing options as to what each character is capable of in terms of fight style or limitations or advantages. Something like a character that punches a lot has boxing gloves. Seems nearly all have something in the customizations to make it so you can instantly recognize what the character does or can do. Just something I noticed trolling through all the options. An example would be Lili @ 3:50 who has a leopard outfit, and if you think about it she sort of plays like a willie cat with her moves. Yoshimitsu has knee guards that have a prominent piece poking out from the knee guard, because he does do a heavy jump knee kick. Things like that. The characters all have different options and if you know them well enough to be familiar with the moves you would notice what I just described. Might have just been the designers thinking about what the character meant to them, he is a puncher so he should have gloves sort of thing. Just something you can take advantage of also.

UPDATE: A perfect example is Roger Jr. his 3rd character slot can be made so he has red gloves, red shoes, a red head and exclusive to the third slot a red tail. All this is important because his moves include, punching, kicking, head butts and tail wips, so you can pick this character and know (remember) instantly what he does cause of all the red. The use of swords on the left or right side is a good way to remember what is the dominate (left/right) punching or kicking side, or what side to start a punch from sort of thing.
