PS5 game capture test OBS, ProRes, Apple Silicon Mac, UVC card, DaVinci Resolve upscaled to 4K 60FPS
8This is an example of a workflow I mentioned in a previous video using OBS Studio recording ProRes 422 HQ on a MacBook Pro M1 Max Apple Silicon Mac computer.
Here’s the description of the workflow.
Console and game. Although the title says PS5 it may have been the Xbox Series X (I have both and can’t remember which one I used for this test) and Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 was used for the game as it has good graphics for testing.
The console was set to 1080P 59.94FPS because the UVC capture interface can’t do 4K 59.94FPS
The console was connected to a UVC HDMI capture interface by KUHAIMI https://amzn.to/3ImcA9d
The KUHAIMI UVC HDMI capture interface was connected to the MacBook Pro M1 Max https://amzn.to/3jVREws via a USB C to USB C cable to one (any) of the Thunderbolt ports on the Mac.
The KUHAIMI interface only comes with a USB C to USB A cable so I used this USB C to USB C cable https://geni.us/XG1xP
OBS Studio was set to record 1080P 59.94FPS from the KUHAIMI interface, which matches the resolution and frame rate from the console (both the PS5 and Series X output 59.94FPS not 60FPS).
OBS Studio was set to record using the ProRes 422 HQ codec in hardware. Although, depending on your Mac, the software variation should be fine and both the hardware and software variations will produce the same quality. The audio quality was also set to the maximum bitrate that OBS Studio uses for AAC.
The OBS Studio ProRes 422 HQ recording was then imported into DaVinci Resolve Studio and its project was set to 4K/UHD at 59.94FPS. Once in the timeline, the 1080P ProRes 422 HQ from OBS Studio is automatically upscaled to 4K/UHD by Resolve, I use the Lanczos filter in master project settings for scaling.
After a slight edit, the timeline was exported in H.265 MOV using the Apple hardware encoder, two pass, fast processing de-selected, 10-Bit 4:2:0 (although 8-Bit would be the same visually after the YouTube compression) and a bitrate of 100Mb/s. The audio was set PCM 24-Bit, although 16-Bit would also be the same.
This export is what was then used for the YouTube upload.
The reason for the upscale to 4K is because all my stuff is in at least 4K. Also, a 4K upscale and upload to YouTube will force YouTube to use VP9 for the 1080P stream, which looks quantifiably better than H.264, which is what likely you’d get if you uploaded in 1080P. Also, the upscale to 4K can add subjective sharpness.
This workflow can be altered a bit to suit your needs and may well be a good starting point for using with other video editing software and target outputs and streaming platforms.
