[PSO2] Battle Mode: Let's go for LEGEND! - Part 1
Welcome to a mini series for the game Phantasy Star Online 2 for Xbox/PC featuring newly introduced game mode: BATTLE MODE! The video itself is a raw cut with no commentary, but I'll provide a mini review of the maps, weapons, and overall tips. If I'm not lazy, maybe I'll even find the time to link some actual time stamps! Don't count on it though.
Specifically, this video series goes over the path to becoming LEGEND. It starts off already at rank S1. So basically, I'm already 93%-ish done. You need 2000 points to become LEGEND.
Notes before we begin:
- "Ndolger, I hate this mode, why should I care?" Do you like STAR GEMS? Star Gems. Buy them from the store. Get them passively for ranking high. I mean they give a LOT. Titles too!
- Overview: If you're coming into this mode blind, you're....you're probably going to have a bad time. In my small sample size of friends that play the game, pretty much everyone doesn't like it! That's OK. You're wrong. It's actually a really fun and balanced mode. Truly! I'll explain as I go.
- This is a 6 v 6 mode. It's unclear if there'll be additional "mode types". Maybe Japanese players can answer. However, right now, we have one mode, it's called "Emblem Scramble". Basically, you run around collecting emblems and holding onto territory. It's basically a king of the hill / capture the flag mode. It's fun! I like it. You can play different ways: brute, ninja, emblem collector, support, melee, mage, you name it! We'll cover these later.
- How to win: Your team has more points after 5 minutes. You start at a base "loss" of 30 points a death. The more you die, the less you lose. So it's got a built in handicap. You can always tell who is having a bad time by looking at the log. See a -17? They're having a bad time. Maybe help them! See a guy who just lost -107 points? Wow, he's umm, been destroying you! -
- The game has a radar, but only for half the opposing team (you can see all your team), the top half. And this is important. This is another handicap system in that if you can fell these top 3 you get MORE POINTS. Why? Because they've been gorging on the souls of the vanquished! Get them! I honestly think it's very well designed.
Weapons:
- Overview: I don't cover all types in this series, because I do re-roll to get my favorites. I suggest you play something you're competent with.
- Long range:
* Rifle:
= Steady Shot: Volcano only. Oh my is this lovely. Much like main series, it's really strong and easy to kill with. Find this!
= "HP Reducing Death Ray": All maps. Really solid weapon. Really far range, easy to hit with. Cripples the opponent if you don't kill them (especially with no Cure as an item).
= Positron Blast: Tokyo only. Chargeable (two levels). Highly suggest you charge max because it's a OHKO (almost always?). Can fire two blasts, 40 PP a hit, but does CONSUME PP while holding. Be careful! Pew Pew.
* Talis: All. My BREAD AND BUTTER. Absolutely essential that SOMEONE on the team is playing this to hold territory, punish people going for the middle. It's such a FANTASTIC WEAPON. Honestly, if there's one weapon to master, it's this. There's a lot of examples of me using this in all 3 stages. It kills in two "hits". It's hard to avoid, detect. Really susceptible to Mechgun! Melee can be avoided by simply casting around you (don't throw).
* Rod: Megid. No. It's just...there's better options. Zonde. Better...normally not great, BUT it's SUPERB for picking off campers. I will say that! Very niche weapon though. FOIE...now we're talking. Let's just say...watch the last fight of part 2. That's the best example of how to play with this weapon. It's STRONG and charges and can be used multiple times. It's a good weapon.
* Bow: Look, if you have one dedicated player using Bow. It's probably OK, but...man...is this a high risk / high reward weapon. You are literally a sitting duck, especially in Tokyo. Make sure you LOCK ON with it. I have had very little lucky manually aiming. Final Nemesis is THE only PA.
* Mechgun: Solid weapon. Kills mainly in 3 volleys (of 2). Really good at pinning opponents down 1 on 1. You're just vulnerable to how long it takes to finish someone! Great for holding an area too! Highly recommended.
- Soaring Blades: Well, technically it's a hybrid, but I NEVER use it as a close range weapon. The BLADES it throws are just so AWESOME. Fly around like a bird dealing devastating needles to your opponent. CACTAUR would be so proud.
- Close range:
* Sword: Three PAs: Vertical: Great for OHKO. Slash: Great for clearing. SURFBOARD: Use this. :) There's a few examples in these videos! It's...probably the best PA in the game. Seriously. Kills in two hits.
* Knuckles / Twin Daggers: I don't cover it once in the video series. It's not bad. Just not my favorite. In general, I just like playing RANGED.
