PSX Adventure of Little Ralph - PSG [retro style] Selected Loud Remix OST ちっぽけラルフの大冒険 BGM
At one point in time classic 2D style games were quite rare on the original PlayStation. One reason is obvious - Sony built a focus on 3D hardware and wanted to push those types of games. Adventure of Little Ralph was an exception to the rule and fully old school 2D action platforming game. Now it is a bit of a collector's item and increasing in price as people realize how unique it was.
It is actually a pretty orthodox platforming game but very fun: stages don't overstay their welcome, there is a deep scoring system built in and it is sort of speed runner friendly with lots of tricks to navigate the stages. The stages feel challenging but not unfair. It is a great game overall.
The game was originally going to be released on X68000, probably was stuck in development long enough that they lost the window to release there. There are two whole separate soundtracks inside the game you can select from in the options menu. You can feel the love they put into it because they included a special PSG mode that sounds closer to retro game music (PSG = Programmable Sound Generator, basically like coding instead of redbook CD audio). Also the item you collect in the game that is a "Computer" is obviously a Sharp X68000 and you also receive 68000 points for collecting it. The rights to Little Ralph are now owned by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collavier_Corporation who acquired the IP of the developer's new company (Ertain). See http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/New for the complicated history of the developer. One can only hope that a modern port comes out for this game.
Composers:
Hiroshi Kuronuma 黒沼弘
Hideki Satou 佐藤英樹
Naoki Tsuchiya 土屋直樹
Naoki Tsuchiya not only did the sound and created the sound effects, but also provided the voice for the main character, Ralph, and other characters were all done by members of the production staff as well. Naoki did a Q and A with pixelatedaudio where he confirms the PSG version was created in his words "because I felt PSG was a real representation of game music in the 80s and I wanted to respect that history".
The official publisher for the soundtrack in Japan is Project Egg https://www.amusement-center.com/project/emusic/cgi/eggmusic_catalog-detail.cgi?product_id=8872 who have done a great job making music and old games available in convenient and well tested formats (you could think of them like the GOG of Japan). Now I really want to find a copy of this game too!!
