One of my favourite developers growing up was one of those companies who would regularly churn out hit after hit and they would usually appear for free on a ST Format cover disk. Psycho Pig 2 was made by that dev called Animalsoft and I believe that this is an exclusive for the Atari ST. If you're wondering what just happened with the original Psycho Pig, yeah I was also wondering that. I know that Animalsoft also made SimPig, so maybe that's Psycho Pig 1?

The game is a 2D platformer where you control the titular pig across five different worlds as he tries to find the baby crocodile somewhere on the stage. The first four levels can be played in any order, with the final level unlocked once you beat them all.

Unfortunately each croc is guarded by a boss but thankfully you have a short range gun at your disposal to defeat your enemies. The levels are not simple just walk from left to right affairs, you will need to search them for items littered throughout the stage just to get to said boss. For instance on the desert level you need to find a shovel in order to dig into the top of the pyramid.

Like most of Animalsoft's games the title is bright and colourful and each world has their own distinct personality. True it’s not the most detailed that the ST can handle, but I still like the look of the game, the sprites are drawn well and there doesn't seem to be any noticeable technical problems. The scrolling goes for a flip screen effect such as seen in the Legend of Zelda which isn't ideal as it means that certain enemies can sneak up on you as they appear on the next screen and it would have been nice to have some in-game music, but those are my only two complaints with the game in general.

The game plays just how you'd expect with the joystick being used to move and fire to shoot, using your special items is automatically and happens when you reach the required spot in the level. Psycho himself has a small life bar, however you do need to be careful because there doesn’t seem to be of a recovery period. Whenever he gets hit, he gets knocked back, if when getting knocked back you land on a spike trap then you instantly get hit, fall backwards onto another spike trap, get hit again, until eventually your full life bar ends up being nothing. It like to think of that as one of the quirks of the game in that the title is fairly challenging and it takes a few attempts to full scope out the levels to find out where out where everything is in order to find the boss and then work out its pattern in order to beat the stage. Overall this is a fantastic PD release that I do recommend tracking down, along with the rest of the Animalsoft library.

I have been meaning to do this one for a while, however I could not remember for the life of me where all the objects are scattered around the levels in order to finish it. I could remember it easily as a kid, however these days it’s more of a grey area.
