Golden Axe is a Sega arcade classic and a personal favourite of mine and a big reason why I enjoy scrolling beat em ups. This of course is the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis version, but it was also released for the Master System and a whole load of different computer formats such as the Atari ST of which there’s already a video on in my channel.

Golden Axe sees the evil Death Adder and his minions overthrowing the land, pillaging and terrorising the kingdomand stealing the legendary Golden Axe. A barbarian called Ax Battler, a Dwarf called Gilius Thunderhead and the Amazon Tyris Flare, decide to fight the evil power and take revenge for the death of their loved ones.
Just like the arcade original you have to move from left to right in a stage attacking all that come whilst utilising mounts such as the dragons and chicken head creatures to beat off the enemy horde. The controls map well to the Mega Drive controller with each button being assigned to the magic, attack and jump button and overall the experience is very smooth and responsive.

There are a few notable differences between this version and the arcade original. There are a few frames of animations missing from some of the characters, but everything else seems to be there. There's also a training mode which is stupidly easy and ends after act 3, a duel mode which sees you taking on enemy after enemy in a 1 on 1 arena and it adds a brand new level to the end of the game and a new final boss (who has an incredibly cheap magic move). The last level and new final boss is nothing special and doesn’t really make me want to play this one over the other ports of the game. The only other thing that is different is that you don't see Alex the wounded soldier from being beaten to death in the beginning of the game. Maybe Sega thought that this was too violent? It can’t be due to cartridge size, the Atari ST version had the scene and that came on two small floppy disks.

The 16-bit version of Golden Axe is a fabulous release that is well worth playing and should be in everyone’s collection at least once. It’s not my favourite scrolling beat em up on the Mega Drive - Streets of Rage 2 takes that honour, but is still a classic in my eyes.
