PuLiRuLa is structured in 2.5D side-scrolling and supports up to two players in cooperative mode. As a weapon at your disposal you have a magic staff to which you add bonus spells that can “clean up” the screen. The action takes place over six levels with final bosses. Each time a common enemy is eliminated, it transforms into an animal and can be picked up for bonus points.

The bosses in levels 2, 3 and 5 are actually some of the inhabitants of Radish (the one in 5 is the worker) whom Jack O'Colson kidnapped before stealing the key; he then transformed them into bizarre beings and then reprogrammed them to try to eliminate the heroes. After the successful outcome of the fights hired by Zac and Mel, Jack's three victims regain their normal characteristics. In the Japanese version, the boss of the second level appears in the appearance of a dancer with a jointed trunk, with very ambiguous moves.

At the end of the sixth level Mel and Zac must fight Jack O'Colson. When he is killed, his soul penetrates the worker, who also undergoes a physical transformation, with his appearance becoming identical to Jack's: thus, a new confrontation ensues, and only after the final defeat of the villain will the worker regain his original character and physical traits.

Players have three magic attacks at their disposal that can be increased to five; each attack is random and cannot be chosen. There are six types instead:

Magic Waterfall: a swarm of stars descends from the sky striking anyone in range.

Mr. Mikata: overweight magical dancer who starts dancing around the screen overwhelming any enemy.

Flying Fairy: appears and starts whirling quickly dealing damage to anyone it encounters in its path.

Herd of Animals: a horde of enraged animals runs from right to left mowing down enemies, sometimes there are also some snails that move slowly and double the damage. This attack is the only one that cannot be directed against flying enemies, who therefore remain unharmed.

Tornado: as per its name, it starts spinning quickly sucking in enemies it encounters.

Masked man: the most jaw-dropping attack. A funny little masked man (a wrestler) appears on the screen along with a huge microwave oven: he catches ordinary enemies one by one, turns them into spaghetti balls and then cooks them, thus eliminating them from the game.
