Using puzzles and riddles in tabletop rpgs is something that can be extremely tricky for a DM or GM. Not to mention the players in the game. The whole point of using this kind of encounter is to have your players think and not just have them roll dice to get through the adventure. The trick is to give them puzzles and riddles they can solve. Perhaps giving hints and advice for high die rolls or stats.
