For you, it's been about 8 days since I last covered the Long Dark, but for me, it's been about 12-13 days. I've covered a couple other titles since then, and I thought now would be a good time to hit this back up for another mini-series. With that said, welcome back to Pwnery's Penny Arcade and the First 30 of Season 2 of the Long Dark Survival Sandbox. Where I left you last was at the entrance of Coastal Highway, the next major map heading east from Mystery Lake. The goal of this miniseries is to try to get as much as we need on this map, traverse eastward through the Crumbling Highway (a connector-type map similar to Ravine in purpose), and make our way to Desolation Point - another giant map rich with resources and points of interest. Along the way, we'll get decimated by blizzards, and a pair of wolf attacks, not once, but twice - and still somehow manage to live through it, and we may even kill our first bear! Danger, and the elements will throw everything in our away this play-through.

Parts of the proceeds go towards Canadian wildlife and forestry conservation too - a noble effort for a game developer. Keep the wild, look wild I suppose. I can appreciate that having frequented Kodiak Island, Alaska a few times in my life (heck, I may retire there some day).

So as for my video series, I'll spare the storyline mode since it's been covered at length and ad nauseum by many gamers and reviewers alike, but as a gamer guy, a gun guy, a tinkerer, and an outdoorsman, my inner geek would love to share with you the sandbox survival mode in this game. The experiences you have in this game are not guaranteed to be a survival technique mind you, however some of the basics of survival are very well covered in it - such as basic orienteering, and weight management, and the importance of watching your caloric intake - real "common sense" kinda stuff if you ever find yourself out in the wild. I'll take you as far as I can in a 5-part mini-series and hopefully get us at least off of one map into the next area.
