May work on a hdd but i would not recomend it and it uses around 11gb of vram when in game at 4K.
At 1080p medium spec you should or may get away with 8gb.
To force resolution open up Quake 4/q4bace at the bottom open up Quake4Config.cfg with note pad and change these lines change the numbers to your resolution
Save and exit.

People with more than 12Gb Vran can get a slight increase in textures to run open autoexec.zip with WinRAR in game folder and drop the file into quake 4 q4base folder.
