Quake Compendium - Grunt
4The Grunt is basically a militaristic human that has been rewired by "Quake" to fight against their own kind by using Shotguns. Needless to say, they are a lot like the player, except that they don't have free will and actively try to kill everything they see. Instead, they live from death to death to get orgasmic pleasures.
The Grunt is an interesting foe, mainly because it is found in only the first mission of each episode besides E1M2. He can be killed easily, even with a Shotgun,. yet he is the only hitscan opponent in the game and therefore cannot be dodged like other enemies can. In a way, this means he can be more painful given the right circumstances.
