Unreal Beta 0.83 (10/18/96)
We have made it to the first version of Unreal with any sort of real gameplay! Made in October of 1996, this version is leaps and bounds ahead of that tech demo we saw last time.
Once again we get a handful of maps and the first few are nothing really that special. We learn quickly that we have the ability to jump and crouch, plus we now have a cool looking HUD that feels like it belongs in Quake, but the most impressive thing we see in the world is an elevator. We also get a bunch of "cool graphix" that all the kids were going crazy for in 1998.All of this is on the 8-bit version too, since we can't get higher without messing up the HUD.
Of course, the real spotlight is when we start entering the Egyptian levels. Suddenly we got an Automag sitting in front of us that allows us to fire in two modes, we just went from a walking simulator to a person carrying a gun simulator! We also blunder across a Quadshot. Basically, this translates out to the Pistol and Shotgun of the Unreal universe.
Then we get shot at by a Bigman. In this version they are quite hard due to my total lack of control, but I luck out by having only one in each level. Well, we made things die! While this version features all of this and some in-game music, you can definitely tell it is a beta. The game is still in a tiny window (800x600, so better than before) and we can see some technical stuff in places. Also note the whole "falling through the world" at various points or getting trapped by falling down into a pit of Lava that doesn't kill me. We also don't have too many sounds, though there are some.
Still, the most fun is to be had by accessing the console. All the cool stuff is in there, including quite a handful of enemies from Unreal as well as a Dragon, though pretty much everyone cannot kill you which is why you never see them. You can also summon two more guns, though one crashes the game. The Stinger on the other hand is a nice thing to get in this early version, it helps me kill stuff with a semi-wave of familiarity. We are getting closer to the great game Unreal... we just are two years away.
Also note that there are technically two versions of Unreal Beta 0.83. I just cannot tell them apart and feel they are entirely redundant to showcase. The main level seems to have been changed to the Main one shown here instead of BatSet. There also seemed to be less visual anomalies in that release, though I blasted through pretty quickly just to see if anything was different.
